In der >GG als universal angenommener Regelmechanismus (>Regel) oder Parameter, nach welchem eine Sprache eine Pro-Drop-Sprache sein kann bzw. dies ausgeschlossen ist.
Die positive Belegung des Pro-Drop-Parameter besagt, dass in der betreffenden Sprache ein leeres Subjekt, das als pro bezeichnet wird, als Subjekt eines finiten Verbs auftreten kann, z.B. im Italienischen (mangia 'er/sie/es isst'), im Griechischen (>Griechisch), Sardinischen oder Spanischen.
Die von Perlmutter (1971) für die >GG entdeckte Erscheinung geht mit weiteren Eigenschaften der entsprechenden Sprache einher, welche im Pro-Drop-Parameter zusammengefasst werden und Thema laufender Untersuchungen sind, z.B. der Distribution von Expletiva in subjektlosen Sätzen, vgl. sard.

Neben spezifischen Eigenschaften (z.B. definite Referenz, Nicht-Unterwerfung unter die Prinzipien der Bindung (>Bindungstheorie) besitzt pro generalisierbare Eigenschaften, etwa wie >PRO, strikt nominativisch zu sein. Sprachen, in welchen pro keine Referenz besitzt, werden als Semi-Pro-Drop-Sprachen bezeichnet, z.B. dt.
[dass (pro) gelacht wurde].
