Translation:
My dear colleague, in Hollywood and San Francisco I received your friendly lines, and I thank you very much for your touching concern about my fate.
In Los Angeles I had myself examined thoroughly again: 1,99% sugar, nothing else (except a toothache),
subjectively alright, except occasional exhaustion,
which is easily explained, however, given the collossal exertions. You cannot imagine how one practically
tears me to pieces. I am indeed of the opinion that the 14 days on the Pacific, which I hope will live up to its
name, will do me a lot of good, and the physicians are of the same opinion. And if I should indeed kick the
bucket in the Orient, well, unfortunately, once everyone has to go, and I have lived and worked so intensely,
that my cup could be said to be already full. Even so, this trip especially has given me much incentive to prolong my
life with your kind assistance for a few years. I have given many lectures everywhere, lately almost all in
English, I will speak here before the County Medical Association, Forum and Commonwealth, and I always mention
your name as one of the most important American sexologists, often referring to your most kindly translated notes
and printed materials. Next Tuesday I will sail with the Asama Maru to Honolulu (where I will also speak
before the physicians), then on to Tokyo. So far, I have managed to earn the travel expenses, although
hardly anything more for our Institute and myself. In spite of this, the trip has been wonderful, and if I
should indeed die (which I neither hope nor believe), it would be a beautiful end to my life. Now to
a happy, healthy reunion in the German fatherland! My next address is Imperial Hotel, Tokyo. Your Magnus
Hirschfeld. Give my regards to Viereck and all our common friends, to whom I will write from aboard the
ship. Many greetings to your sister and brother-in-law.
